CCMC, ULC and UL: Which Flooring Document Do You Need?
A laboratory report, a certification listing and a code-compliance assessment answer different questions. Buying the right document starts with the project’s written requirement.
Three evidence routes to keep separate
| Document | What it can establish | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Test report | Results for identified specimens under the stated method and conditions. | Ongoing certification, a certification mark or acceptance for every installation. |
| Certification listing | A product within a defined certification programme and listing scope. | Coverage for products, plants, constructions or destinations outside that scope. |
| CCMC assessment | Technical assessment of a product’s code compliance for an identified intended use and conditions. | A universal requirement for all flooring or approval for every building design. |
Read the scope beside the mark
Do not decide Canadian suitability from a UL or ULC logo in a brochure. Read the issuing organisation, programme, applicable standard, product identity, listing number and Canadian scope in the actual document or listing.
Match the product
Check the product or model identifier and manufacturer. An assessment for a different construction is not evidence for the one being purchased.
Use the listing record
Where a certification claim is made, use the issuing body’s listing record and scope rather than a cropped logo.
Check the conditions
Read substrate, installation, application and limitations. The project authority assesses the submission against the applicable requirement.
When CCMC enters the conversation
CCMC provides technical assessments for construction products. Its published process considers product performance, intended function, installation conditions and the relevant code requirements. The assessment should be read with its conditions and supporting documentation.
Build the document schedule before ordering
- Copy the actual requirementList the method, certificate or assessment requested in the tender, together with the use location and province.
- Identify the proposed buildRecord SKU, board, wear layer, backing, substrate and installation method.
- Map each item to evidenceKeep report results, certification scope and assessment conditions in separate columns.
- Submit the complete fileProvide the designer or authority with the full documents and preserve the accepted construction in the purchase specification.
Questions about Canadian flooring certification
Does every vinyl floor need a CCMC assessment?
A CCMC assessment is not a universal certificate for all vinyl flooring. Use the applicable code route and the project’s specified documentation requirements.
Is a report from a recognised laboratory automatically a certification?
No. The report records test work and results. Product certification has its own programme, listing and mark authorisation.
Can a US document be labelled Canadian compliant?
Not solely because it was issued in North America. The method, Canadian certification scope where relevant, and the project requirement must be read directly.
What should be included with a request for documents?
The exact product build, province, application, tender wording and required method or certification. This avoids asking for a generic certificate that cannot answer the project requirement.
