6mm SPC Click
Flooring Manufacturer
5mm Rigid Core + 1mm IXPE

6mm SPC click flooring (5mm rigid core + 1mm IXPE) occupies a specific engineering position in the SPC thickness range: it is the correct specification when subfloor flatness exceeds the ≤2mm/2m tolerance required by 5mm SPC, but door clearance or budget does not permit 7mm. The 5mm core bridges 2–3mm of subfloor deviation — covering the tolerance gap in EU renovation projects where full subfloor preparation is not in scope. Core density 1.95–2.05 g/cm³. Dimensional stability ≤0.10%. FOB from US$6.80/m².

In Western European renovation markets — particularly the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK — a significant proportion of commercial projects involve existing subfloors with minor irregularities that fall between 5mm SPC’s ≤2mm/2m tolerance and the 3mm+ deviation that requires full screed preparation. Consequently, 6mm SPC fills this gap: it tolerates 2–3mm/2m subfloor deviation without surface telegraphing, without the weight and cost of 7mm, and without the subfloor preparation budget that many renovation projects cannot absorb.

When to specify 6mm vs 5mm vs 7mm — subfloor deviation is the deciding factor
Subfloor ≤ 2mm / 2m → Specify 5mm
Flat subfloor within standard tolerance. 5mm achieves the same ≤0.10% stability at lower weight and lower FOB cost. No performance benefit to upgrading to 6mm on a flat subfloor.
Subfloor 2–3mm / 2m → Specify 6mm ← This Product
Minor irregularities beyond 5mm tolerance but within renovation budget constraints. The 5mm core bridges this deviation without full screed preparation — the defining advantage of 6mm in EU renovation markets.
Subfloor > 3mm / 2m → Prepare Subfloor First
No SPC thickness bridges deviation above 3mm/2m reliably. Subfloor grinding or self-levelling screed is required before installation. Specifying thicker SPC does not solve a subfloor preparation problem.

The 6mm engineering argument — why one millimetre matters
The Subfloor Bridge Advantage
One More Millimetre of Core.
One More Millimetre of Subfloor
Tolerance.
The physics is straightforward: a thicker plank has a greater moment of inertia — its resistance to bending across a gap or depression increases with thickness. The practical consequence is that 6mm SPC (5mm core) bridges subfloor deviations up to approximately 2–3mm/2m without the plank bending enough to telegraph the irregularity to the surface. Consequently, in EU renovation projects where achieving ≤2mm/2m subfloor flatness would require grinding or self-levelling screed — work that is often not in the renovation budget — 6mm SPC eliminates the need for that preparation step while maintaining full surface performance.

Three engineering advantages of 6mm in EU renovation contexts
Eliminates screed preparation on minor deviations
When subfloor deviation falls between 2mm and 3mm/2m — the gap between 5mm’s tolerance and the threshold requiring full screed — 6mm SPC resolves the issue without any additional subfloor work. Specifically, this is the most common scenario in European commercial building stock built before 1990, where concrete subfloors have settled unevenly over decades.
Fits within EU door clearance without undercutting
At 6mm total thickness, the floor remains within the standard EU door clearance tolerance for renovation projects. Furthermore, 6mm adds only 1mm versus 5mm — in most EU renovation contexts, this 1mm difference does not require door undercutting where 5mm already clears. Consequently, the bridging benefit is gained without triggering additional joinery work.
Lower logistics cost than 7mm for the same project
At approximately 9–10 kg/m², 6mm SPC is 1–2 kg/m² lighter than 7mm SPC — allowing approximately 5–8% more square metres per 20ft container. Moreover, for EU importers shipping via Rotterdam or Hamburg, this translates to a meaningful logistics cost advantage on large-volume renovation contracts.

0.5mm US$7.10/m² Wear layer · 20mil

EU renovation standard recommendation: 6mm SPC with 0.5mm wear layer (US$7.10/m² FOB) is the most commonly specified combination for Dutch and German office and retail renovation — achieving EN 685 Class 31/33 with sufficient bridging capacity for pre-1990 concrete subfloors. Furthermore, the same colour code is available across 5mm and 7mm SPC from the same décor film batch, allowing mixed-thickness specification across different zones of the same project.

Ecoflors – 6mm SPC Technical Matrix
Technical Matrix · Six parameters · Each explained for 6mm EU renovation context

The Numbers Behind the Subfloor Bridge.

Every SPC manufacturer publishes the same parameter list — stability, fire rating, indentation, peel resistance. The 6mm specification shares these values with 5mm and 7mm SPC. What is different about 6mm is not the compliance data but the bridging performance and the project context it enables. Consequently, each parameter below is explained in terms of what it means specifically for EU renovation projects with imperfect subfloors.

Six parameters · Each explained in the context of EU renovation with minor subfloor irregularities
Dimensional Stability · Identical to 5mm and 7mm
≤ 0.10 %
Achieved by the 1.95–2.05 g/cm³ limestone-PVC compound — not by core thickness. All three specifications (5mm, 6mm, 7mm) achieve ≤0.10% with the same compound. Consequently, choosing 6mm over 5mm does not improve thermal stability — it improves subfloor bridging. The stability figure is the baseline qualification; the bridging capacity is the procurement differentiator.
EN ISO 23999 · ASTM F2199
Same as 5mm and 7mm — stability is compound-determined, not thickness-determined.
Impact Sound · Marginal improvement over 5mm
△IIC 21–22 dB
The additional plank mass of 6mm versus 5mm contributes marginally to impact sound reduction — approximately 1 dB additional versus 5mm’s △IIC 21. In EU multi-storey residential renovation, this marginal gain is not the primary specification driver; bridging capacity is. Furthermore, the pre-attached IXPE layer delivers the acoustic contribution — the core thickness contributes secondary mass damping.
ASTM E2179 · ISO 717-2
Marginal acoustic improvement over 5mm — not the primary reason to specify 6mm.
Peel Resistance · Co-extrusion bond
≥ 50 N/50mm
The co-extrusion bond between wear layer and core is identical across 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, and 8mm SPC — because it is a materials bond, not a geometry bond. Consequently, wear layer delamination risk does not decrease by specifying thicker SPC. The ≥50N/50mm figure per ISO 24345 is the same across all thicknesses and represents the lifetime bond performance of the co-extruded construction.
ISO 24345:2006
Co-extrusion bond — identical performance across all SPC thicknesses.
Residual Indentation · Static load recovery
0.05 mm avg
Average permanent deformation after sustained concentrated load — the same 0.05mm average across 5mm, 6mm, and 7mm SPC because the recovery performance is determined by the core compound density (1.95–2.05 g/cm³), not by the core depth. Specifically, in EU retail and office renovation, 0.05mm is below the visible detection threshold at standing-height inspection — relevant for post-renovation quality walkthroughs with building owners and facility managers.
ISO 24343-1
Same as 5mm and 7mm — recovery is compound-determined.
Fire Rating · EU commercial mandatory
Bfl-S1
EN 13501-1. Mandatory for all commercial interior floor coverings in the Netherlands (Bouwbesluit 2012), Germany (MBO), and UK (Building Regulations Part B). The 6mm SPC carries Bfl-S1 as a standard specification — additionally, this certification applies regardless of whether the project is new build or renovation. Consequently, EU renovation projects do not require supplementary fire testing when specifying Ecoflors 6mm SPC.
EN 13501-1
NL Bouwbesluit 2012 · DE MBO · UK Part B — all satisfied as standard.
Subfloor Bridging · The 6mm differentiator
2–3 mm / 2m
This is the parameter that defines the 6mm specification — not a standard test value but a practical field performance figure derived from the 5mm core’s moment of inertia increase over 4mm. Specifically, a 6mm SPC plank bridges subfloor depressions up to approximately 2–3mm over a 2-metre straight-edge without the surface deforming visibly above the depression. This covers the tolerance gap between 5mm SPC (≤2mm required) and full screed preparation (needed above 3mm).

Universal Colour Matching — the 6mm renovation advantage: A renovation project often involves both areas with good subfloor conditions (specifying 5mm SPC) and areas with minor irregularities (specifying 6mm SPC). Our Universal Colour Matching produces both thicknesses from the same décor film print run — the colour appears identical under equivalent lighting in both areas. Consequently, the renovation delivers a visually seamless floor across the entire project without the colour mismatch that occurs when thicknesses are sourced from different factories. Furthermore, the same colour is available in Dryback LVT for wet rooms within the same project.

Wood Grain — EIR and Classical Wood

Wood-texture 6mm SPC is the dominant specification for EU office and residential renovation. The EIR process registers the embossed grain to the printed décor within ±0.1mm — the grain you see matches the grain you feel at every knot, ring, and medullary ray. Furthermore, the 6mm core’s bridging advantage means EIR wood grain can be installed directly over older EU concrete subfloors without the flatness preparation that 5mm would require.

Where 6mm SPC Is the Correct Specification.

Three real EU renovation environments where the 6mm bridging advantage is the deciding factor — not aesthetics, but engineering. Each scenario below represents a project where 5mm would be under-tolerance and 7mm would be unnecessarily heavy.

Three EU renovation environments · Each requiring 6mm subfloor bridging capacity
6mm SPC EU office renovation installation — Netherlands Germany — Ecoflors EU Office Renovation · Class 31/33
Scenario 01 · NL / DE Office Renovation
Pre-1990 Concrete Subfloor — Office Refurbishment

The most common 6mm specification scenario in the Netherlands and Germany: a commercial office building from the 1970s–1990s with a concrete subfloor that has settled unevenly over decades. Subfloor deviation is typically 2–3mm/2m — within 6mm SPC’s bridging capacity but beyond 5mm’s tolerance. Consequently, 6mm allows the renovation to proceed without grinding or self-levelling screed, saving 3–5 days of preparation time and significant cost.

6mm · 0.5mm wear layer Class 31/33 Bfl-S1 · CE EN 14041 FOB US$7.10/m²
Why 6mm, not 5mm: 5mm requires ≤2mm/2m subfloor flatness. Pre-1990 EU concrete subfloors rarely meet this without preparation. 6mm bridges the gap — no screed required.
6mm SPC EU social housing renovation apartment — Ecoflors Netherlands EU Social Housing · Class 23–31
Scenario 02 · NL Social Housing Renovation
Woningcorporaties Renovation — Occupied Apartments

Dutch Woningcorporaties (housing associations) undertake large-scale renovation of occupied apartment stock — often without moving tenants out. In this context, grinding or screeding the subfloor is not feasible in an occupied apartment. Specifically, 6mm SPC allows renovation teams to install directly over the existing subfloor in one day per apartment, bridging the minor irregularities that accumulate over 30–50 years of building settlement without any preparation work.

6mm · 0.3–0.5mm wear layer Class 23–31 GREENGUARD Gold FOB US$6.80/m²
Why 6mm, not 7mm: 7mm is heavier and marginally more expensive — neither benefit justifies the premium in a residential renovation where Class 33 performance is sufficient and subfloor deviation is minor.
6mm SPC EU hotel boutique retail renovation — Ecoflors UK Germany EU Boutique Retail · Class 31/33
Scenario 03 · UK / DE Boutique Retail Renovation
High Street Retail — Over Existing Tiles or Concrete

UK and German high street retail renovation often involves installing new flooring directly over existing ceramic tile or uneven concrete — a scenario where 5mm SPC would telegraph grout lines and tile edges through the surface. The 6mm core bridges these irregularities without any tile removal, reducing renovation time from 2–3 days (strip, screed, dry, install) to a single installation day. Furthermore, the 6mm profile remains within standard retail door clearance without undercutting.

6mm · 0.5–0.7mm wear layer Class 33 Over-tile compatible FOB US$7.10–7.50/m²
The over-tile advantage: 6mm SPC installs directly over existing floor tiles without removal — grout lines (typically 2–3mm deep) fall within the 6mm core’s bridging capacity. Total renovation time: one day.

Herringbone pattern vinyl plank on 6mm SPC — EU boutique hotel renovation — Ecoflors
Pattern layouts on 6mm SPC · EU renovation
Herringbone and Chevron on 6mm — the Pattern Renovation Advantage

Pattern flooring (Herringbone and Chevron) uses shorter planks than straight-lay — typically 6″×24″ or 9″×24″. Shorter planks are more sensitive to subfloor irregularities because the deviation-to-plank-length ratio is higher. Consequently, a 2mm subfloor depression that is invisible under a 72″ straight plank may be visible under a 24″ Herringbone plank. The 6mm core’s improved bridging capacity makes it the preferred specification for pattern flooring in EU renovation — the same bridging advantage that helps with straight-lay is amplified in pattern applications.

Is 6mm the Right Thickness for Your Project?

6mm SPC occupies a specific engineering position — it is the correct specification when subfloor flatness falls between 5mm’s ≤2mm/2m tolerance and the 3mm+ deviation that requires full screed preparation. If your subfloor is flat to ≤2mm, 5mm delivers identical performance at lower cost. If your subfloor exceeds 3mm deviation, no SPC thickness bridges it — subfloor preparation is required. Specifically, 6mm is the specification that eliminates screed preparation on minor subfloor irregularities in EU renovation projects.

When Should You Specify 6mm?
Subfloor is flat to ≤2mm/2m — any market
5mm SPC delivers identical stability, acoustic performance, and EN 685 class as 6mm — at lower FOB cost and lighter weight. Specifying 6mm on a flat subfloor adds cost without any engineering return. Consequently, 5mm is the correct specification whenever the subfloor meets its flatness requirement.

Subfloor deviation 2–3mm/2m — EU renovation project, no screed budget
6mm SPC bridges this deviation without surface telegraphing — eliminating the need for grinding or self-levelling screed. This is the defining advantage of 6mm in EU renovation: the screed preparation cost (labour + material + 3–5 day wait) often exceeds the modest FOB premium of 6mm over 5mm. Furthermore, 6mm installs within standard EU door clearance without undercutting.

Class 42/43 required — NL social housing or DE heavy commercial
7mm SPC achieves Class 42/43 utilisation and has the same ≤3mm/2m bridging capacity as 6mm for only a modest FOB premium. Specifically, for Dutch Woningcorporaties projects requiring Class 42/43 and for German public commercial tenders, 7mm is the default specification and is typically required by the tender documents.
