5mm SPC Click
Flooring Manufacturer
4mm Rigid Core + 1mm IXPE

5mm SPC click flooring (4mm rigid core + 1mm IXPE acoustic underlay) is the volume standard for multi-family residential, hotel guest rooms, and light commercial fit-outs across the US, UK, and Australian markets. The 4mm limestone-PVC composite core delivers dimensional stability of ≤0.10% (EN ISO 23999) and impact sound reduction of △IIC 21 (ASTM E2179) — sufficient for Class 31/33 commercial utilisation without the additional material cost of 6mm or 7mm specifications. FOB from US$6.35/m².

The engineering case for 5mm is straightforward: above 4mm core thickness, dimensional stability reaches the same ≤0.10% threshold regardless of additional core depth. Consequently, specifying 6mm or 7mm for a hotel guest room or apartment does not improve performance — it only increases logistics cost per m². We recommend 5mm for every project where the subfloor is flat to ≤2mm/2m and the utilisation class does not exceed Class 33.

SPC Rigid Core · 4mm
Limestone + virgin PVC composite at 1.95–2.05 g/cm³. The 4mm depth achieves dimensional stability ≤0.10% — the physical threshold at which further core depth delivers no additional stability improvement. Consequently, 5mm total is the minimum specification that delivers full Class 33 SPC performance.

IXPE Acoustic Underlay · Pre-attached
1mm cross-linked polyethylene foam pre-laminated to the core. Delivers △IIC 21 impact sound reduction (ASTM E2179) — meeting US multi-family residential IIC requirements without a separate underlay purchase. Furthermore, IXPE is firmer than EVA, preventing the micro-deflection under furniture legs that causes surface indentation over time.

Why 4mm core · The engineering argument for 5mm SPC
The 4mm Core Decision
≤0.10% Stability.
Achieved at 4mm.
Not Improved Beyond It.
SPC dimensional stability is determined by limestone particle density and PVC compounding ratio — not by core thickness alone. Our 1.95–2.05 g/cm³ formulation achieves ≤0.10% (EN ISO 23999) at 4mm core depth. Specifying a 6mm or 7mm core with the same compound delivers the same ≤0.10% stability — with higher material weight, higher freight cost, and identical performance. Consequently, 5mm is the specification that delivers full SPC performance at the lowest logistics cost per m².
IXPE Pre-attached · Impact Sound Reduction
△IIC 21 dB
ASTM E2179 certified. The 1mm IXPE pre-laminated to the SPC core eliminates the on-site underlay step — reducing installation time and eliminating the risk of incompatible underlay selection. Specifically, the total 5mm thickness (4mm core + 1mm IXPE) fits within standard US apartment door clearance without trimming, making it the volume standard for US multi-family renovation projects.
Four market advantages of 5mm SPC specification
US multi-family residential standard
5mm SPC with 0.5mm wear layer and △IIC 21 meets the IIC and STC requirements of most US state building codes for multi-family residential. Furthermore, the 5mm total profile installs within standard apartment door clearances without undercutting frames.
UK and Australian hotel guest room specification
5mm SPC with 0.5mm wear layer is the standard specification for hotel guest room renovation in the UK and Australia. Specifically, the CE and FloorScore certifications satisfy both UK Building Regulations and Australian specification requirements without additional testing.
Lowest FOB cost in SPC click range
At US$6.35/m² (0.3mm wear layer) to US$7.00/m² (0.7mm wear layer), 5mm SPC is the entry point of the click SPC range. Moreover, the lighter weight compared to 6mm and 7mm allows higher sqm per container — reducing logistics cost per m² for US and Australian importers.
Container loading advantage
A 20ft container of 5mm SPC carries approximately 10–12% more square metres than the same container of 7mm SPC. Consequently, for US importers with fixed container budgets, 5mm delivers more floor coverage per shipment — a meaningful difference across 3–5 container orders per year.
Logistics insight · 20ft container advantage
5mm SPC weighs approximately 8–9 kg/m² versus 10–12 kg/m² for 7mm SPC. A standard 20ft container reaches its weight limit before its volume limit with heavier SPC — consequently, 5mm allows more sqm per container without exceeding the 28-tonne payload limit. For US West Coast importers (LA / Long Beach), this means lower freight cost per m² and faster warehouse replenishment cycles.

What the Numbers Mean for Your 5mm Project.

Every SPC manufacturer publishes the same parameter list. The difference is whether those numbers are explained in the context of real installation conditions. Consequently, each parameter below is described in terms of what it means for a US multi-family building, a UK hotel renovation, or an Australian retail fit-out — the three environments where 5mm SPC is most commonly specified.

Six parameters · Each linked to a 5mm SPC real-world specification scenario
Dimensional Stability · The core performance claim
≤ 0.10 %
Achieved at 4mm core depth with our 1.95–2.05 g/cm³ limestone-PVC compound. In a US multi-family building with underfloor radiant heating cycling between 15°C and 28°C, a 1.2m plank at 0.10% stability moves 1.2mm — within Uniclic joint tolerance. Furthermore, this figure is identical to what a 7mm core delivers with the same compound — confirming that 5mm is not a stability compromise.
EN ISO 23999 · ASTM F2199
5mm advantage: Same ≤0.10% as 6mm and 7mm — at lower weight and lower FOB cost per m².
Impact Sound Reduction · IXPE pre-attached
△IIC 21 dB
ASTM E2179 certified on our 5mm SPC with 1mm IXPE pre-attached. US multi-family building codes (ICC and most state codes) require IIC ≥50 for floor/ceiling assemblies — the IXPE layer contributes approximately 18–21 points toward this target, with the remainder achieved by the ceiling assembly below. Specifically, the pre-attached IXPE eliminates the installer’s risk of selecting an incompatible separate underlay that voids the Uniclic joint warranty.
ASTM E2179 · ISO 717-2
Pre-attached advantage: No separate underlay purchase, no compatibility risk, no installation step.
Peel Resistance · Wear layer bond
≥ 50 N/50mm
ISO 24345:2006. The wear layer bond in SPC is achieved by co-extrusion — not adhesive lamination — making delamination a material failure rather than a bonding failure. Consequently, our ≥50N/50mm peel resistance holds throughout the product lifetime regardless of thermal cycling, cleaning agent exposure, or sustained furniture load. This figure is the same across 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, and 8mm SPC.
ISO 24345:2006
Co-extrusion bond: No adhesive to fail. Peel resistance does not degrade with age or heat.
Residual Indentation · Furniture load recovery
0.05 mm avg
ISO 24343-1. Average permanent deformation after a concentrated static load — relevant for hotel room furniture, office chairs, and retail shelving. At 1.95–2.05 g/cm³ core density, our 5mm SPC recovers to within 0.05mm of its original surface level after sustained furniture loads. Specifically, this is below the visual detection threshold at normal standing-height inspection distance — relevant for hotel guest room quality walkthroughs.
ISO 24343-1
Specification note: 0.05mm applies at 1.95–2.05 g/cm³. Lower-density SPC (below 1.85 g/cm³) does not achieve this figure.

Uniclic / I4F Locking System

The global standard for SPC floating floor installation. Uniclic-compatible joints engage with a fold-down motion — the long side of each plank clicks into the previous row at a shallow angle, then lowers flat. Consequently, no mallet is required on the long side, and the joint achieves the lock strength needed for Class 33 commercial utilisation without tools. Available on all 5mm SPC configurations.

Hotel Guest Room & Corridor Renovation

5mm SPC with 0.5mm wear layer is the standard hotel guest room specification across US, UK, and Australian hotel brands. The 5mm total profile installs within standard door clearances without frame modification — a critical constraint in hotel renovation projects where rooms must return to service within 24–48 hours. Furthermore, the Välinge 5G push-down click system reduces installation time by 30–40% versus Uniclic on the short side, supporting tighter renovation schedules.

Why 5mm, not 7mm: Hotel guest rooms do not generate the sustained wheeled load that requires 7mm core depth. Specifying 7mm adds weight, increases logistics cost, and may require door undercutting — none of which improves performance in a guest room context.

Which SPC Thickness Is Right for Your Project?

SPC thickness is an engineering decision, not a quality decision. The correct thickness is determined by three factors: the EN 685 utilisation class required, the subfloor flatness available, and the logistics budget per m². Specifically, 5mm is not a compromise — it is the engineering optimum for the majority of residential and light commercial projects. The following comparison explains when to stay with 5mm and when to upgrade.

Specification decision guide
Which Thickness Should You Specify?
US multi-family, UK hotel, or AU residential — subfloor flat to ≤2mm
5mm with 0.5mm wear layer is the correct and sufficient specification. Upgrading to 6mm or 7mm does not improve dimensional stability, acoustic performance, or utilisation class for these environments. Consequently, any additional cost above 5mm is not justified by a performance return.
→ Specify 5mm SPC
EU social housing, German office, or Dutch commercial — subfloor may vary
7mm provides greater bridging capacity over minor subfloor irregularities (2–3mm/2m deviation) and achieves Class 42/43 for heavy commercial utilisation. Furthermore, 7mm is the default specification for EU distributors supplying to German and Dutch commercial projects.
→ Specify 7mm SPC
Airport, hospital, supermarket — Class 44 required
No click SPC achieves Class 44 — permanent adhesive bonding is required. Specifically, Class 44 is only achievable with Dryback (glue-down) LVT. If Class 44 is the specification requirement, the correct product is 3.0mm Dryback LVT with 0.7mm wear layer — not thicker SPC.
→ Specify Dryback LVT 3mm
