Indonesia’s national standard framework is governed by Government Regulation No. 34 of 2018. Where an SNI is designated mandatory by a technical ministry, the product cannot be lawfully imported or distributed without the SNI mark — and the certificate must be held by a local legal entity.
The point most factories never tell you
Under Indonesian law, an SNI certificate for an imported product must be applied for and held by a local legal entity — the importer, distributor, or a subsidiary. The overseas manufacturer cannot hold it directly. This makes your appointed Local Partner Distributor or Importer of Record the responsible party for the certificate, while the factory’s role is to supply the technical evidence pack that the certification body requires.
Two schemes are common: SNI Type 1n (batch / shipment-based, faster, suited to pilot or limited shipments) and SNI Type 5 (full scheme with factory audit, used for ongoing business continuity). Choosing the wrong scheme inflates per-shipment cost or delays continuity.
