BREEAM Flooring Credits for SPC & LVT: What UK Specifiers Need
When a UK project targets BREEAM, the assessor needs the right evidence from the flooring — not marketing claims. Here is exactly which BREEAM credit SPC and LVT contribute to, which certification BREEAM actually recognises, what a product can and can’t do for the score, and the documents to collect.
Short answer
SPC and LVT contribute most directly to BREEAM’s indoor air quality credit (Hea 02 in NC 2018; Hea 04 from NC v7) through low-VOC certification. BREEAM recognises exactly three VOC schemes — FloorScore, Indoor Advantage Gold and GREENGUARD — and Ecoflors holds two of them. The product is one input; the project earns the credit with ventilation, an air-quality plan and, often, post-construction testing.

Where SPC actually contributes
The BREEAM credit SPC & LVT support: indoor air quality
BREEAM is the UK’s building sustainability assessment, and the credit flooring contributes to most reliably sits in the Health & Wellbeing category: Indoor Air Quality. In BREEAM UK New Construction 2018 (and v6) this is Hea 02; from New Construction v7 the indoor air quality credit moved to Hea 04. Whichever scheme your project uses, the relevant criterion for flooring is the same idea — VOC emission levels (products) — which rewards specifying low-emitting materials such as paints, adhesives, ceilings and floor coverings.
Flooring sits in the “resilient, textile and laminated floor coverings” product category. To contribute, the floor has to demonstrate it meets BREEAM’s VOC testing and emission-level criteria — and BREEAM accepts certain third-party certifications as proof.
The key fact for an importer: you do not need to commission bespoke BREEAM testing if your product already carries a BREEAM-recognised VOC certificate. The certificate is the accepted evidence — which is exactly what FloorScore and GREENGUARD Gold provide.
What BREEAM actually recognises

Ecoflors SPC and LVT carry two of the three recognised schemes — FloorScore and GREENGUARD Gold — so the BREEAM VOC-emissions evidence for the flooring is already in hand. Both are verifiable on the SCS Global Services and UL Product iQ public databases.

The honest part — a product is one input
What the indoor air quality credit actually requires
This is where specifications go wrong. The flooring certificate is necessary, but the indoor air quality credit is project-level — the floor is only one of several inputs. To actually achieve it, the project team typically needs:

Low-VOC products across categories
Flooring, paints, adhesives, ceilings and other finishes meeting the VOC criteria — your FloorScore / GREENGUARD covers the flooring line.

A designed, dimensioned ventilation strategy
The building’s ventilation must be properly designed to dilute and remove pollutants. Nothing to do with the floor — but required for the credit.

An Indoor Air Quality Plan (IAQP)
A documented plan to control pollution during construction and into occupation, per BREEAM Guidance Note GN06.

Post-construction VOC / formaldehyde monitoring (often)
For fully fitted buildings, a separate credit rewards measuring TVOC and formaldehyde before occupation to confirm low levels.
So the honest framing is: Ecoflors flooring contributes to the indoor air quality credit by supplying recognised low-VOC evidence for the floor covering. The project earns the credit by combining that with ventilation, the IAQP and monitoring. Anyone who tells you a floor “gets you the BREEAM credit” on its own is overstating it.

EPDs and the materials credits (Mat 01)
Beyond indoor air quality, BREEAM’s Materials category — principally Mat 01 — rewards understanding and reducing the life-cycle environmental impact of construction materials, and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are the recognised evidence. If you hold an Ecoflors EPD, supply it to the project team: it supports the materials life-cycle assessment that Mat 01 is built around.
One honest boundary, the same as on a LEED project: Ecoflors SPC uses virgin PVC and natural limestone, with no recycled content claimed. So the flooring contributes through its EPD and its low-VOC certification — not through a recycled-content claim. We don’t inflate a recycled percentage to chase a materials credit. Be straight with the assessor — where SPC does and doesn’t help

→Indoor air quality (Hea 02 / Hea 04) — recognised low-VOC evidence via FloorScore and GREENGUARD Gold.
→Materials (Mat 01) — a product EPD supports the life-cycle assessment.
→Wet-area suitability — waterproof SPC/LVT suits bathrooms and kitchens (which also need mould-growth resistance evidence).
✗ Where SPC does NOT help
→Recycled content — virgin PVC; no recycled-content claim, so it does not contribute to that route.
→The whole IAQ credit alone — ventilation, the IAQP and monitoring are the project’s job, not the floor’s.
Telling an assessor a product does something it can’t is how evidence gets rejected at review. SPC’s honest BREEAM story — recognised low-VOC certification plus an EPD — is strong enough on its own.

Which BREEAM credit does SPC or LVT flooring contribute to?
Most directly the indoor air quality credit in the Health & Wellbeing category — Hea 02 in BREEAM UK New Construction 2018 (and v6), which moved to Hea 04 from New Construction v7. Is FloorScore accepted by BREEAM?
Yes. Does a FloorScore floor earn the BREEAM indoor air quality credit on its own?
No. The flooring certificate is necessary evidence for the floor-covering line, but the credit is project-level: it also requires low-VOC products across other categories, a properly designed ventilation strategy, an Indoor Air Quality Plan, and often post-construction VOC and formaldehyde monitoring. The product contributes; the project earns the credit.
Does SPC flooring contribute to BREEAM recycled-content credits?
No. Ecoflors SPC uses virgin PVC and natural limestone with no recycled content claimed, so it does not contribute to a recycled-content route. Its genuine BREEAM contribution is recognised low-VOC certification (FloorScore, GREENGUARD Gold) for indoor air quality, and a product EPD for the materials life-cycle credit (Mat 01). We don’t inflate a recycled percentage to chase a credit.
What is the difference between BREEAM Hea 02 and Hea 04?
They are the same indoor air quality credit at different scheme versions. In BREEAM UK New Construction 2018 and v6 it is Hea 02; from New Construction v7 the indoor air quality credit was relocated to Hea 04. The flooring evidence — a BREEAM-recognised low-VOC certificate — is the same in both. Always confirm the reference for your project’s registered scheme version.
