Dryback vs Click vs Loose Lay LVT — Which Installation System Should You Specify?

LVT floor coverings share the same surface — wear layer, décor film, UV coating — but connect to the subfloor in three completely different ways, and each is correct for a different project. Dryback (glue-down) bonds permanently with adhesive and is the only system that reaches EN 685 Class 44 — the specification for hospitals, airports and heavy commercial. Click LVT / SPC is a floating floor with a mechanical joint — no adhesive, faster, up to Class 43. Loose lay holds by a friction-grip, fibreglass-reinforced backing — no adhesive, no click, lifts in seconds, up to Class 42/43. Specify the wrong system and you get either a warranty claim or a failed specification — neither is fixable without replacing the floor.

Full-spread adhesive bonds the plank permanently to the prepared subfloor — zero movement under load. Correct for rolling-load environments, wet areas, and any project requiring EN 685 Class 44. Dryback LVT — when a permanent bond is the specification

Dryback LVT is the most commercially proven system. The adhesive bond eliminates the joint movement that causes click and loose-lay floors to fail under sustained rolling load, which makes it the mandatory choice wherever pallet jacks, hospital trolleys or baggage trolleys operate. The three gauges serve distinct roles: 2 mm for volume residential; 2.5 mm for EU commercial (Class 33/42 — office renovation, housing-association corridors, UK retail); and 3 mm with a 0.7 mm wear layer, the only LVT that reaches Class 44 for healthcare, airports and supermarket sales floors.

The Class 44 rule — the bond is non-negotiable

EN 685 Class 44 requires both a 0.7 mm wear layer and a permanent adhesive bond. A floating click floor with 0.7 mm wear reaches Class 43 — not Class 44. If the brief states Class 44, dryback glue-down is the only compliant system.

Click LVT and SPC — when floating installation is correct

Click floors — rigid-core SPC and flexible-core click LVT — float on the subfloor without adhesive, which makes installation fast, programme-friendly and reversible. SPC has a rigid limestone-PVC core (1.95–2.05 g/cm³), dimensional stability ≤0.10% (EN ISO 23999), and reaches Class 43 with a 0.7 mm wear layer — the choice for commercial, UFH-equipped homes and acoustic-sensitive high-rise residential. Flexible-core click LVT is warmer and quieter underfoot, Class 33/42, for residential where walking comfort outranks maximum durability.

Common error — click in a heavy-rolling-load environment

Click joints deflect under sustained trolley or pallet-jack traffic, producing joint noise and eventually separation. If the project sees daily wheeled loads or foot traffic above Class 33/42, dryback is the correct system — regardless of the click product’s stated class.

Loose Lay LVT — the office-renovation and raised-access specialist

Loose lay LVT fills a niche neither dryback nor click serves well. Its friction-grip backing — stabilised by a single or dual fibreglass reinforcement layer that stops the PVC stretching or curling with temperature — holds the floor with no adhesive and no cure time. That fibreglass layer is what makes friction-only installation viable: a plank lifts in seconds, so the subfloor stays accessible.

Two applications define it. Phased renovation in occupied buildings: a zone is finished at the end of a working day and in use the next morning. Raised-access floors — including data centres and server rooms: adhesive is usually not permitted on removable panels and click joints sound hollow over them, whereas loose lay leaves every panel liftable for cabling and cooling access (a dual-fibreglass build spans between pedestals without deflection, with an anti-static option for sensitive environments). The limits are firm: not for wet areas (water migrates under the edges), not above Class 42/43, and it needs a particularly flat subfloor — there is no adhesive layer to bridge minor irregularities.

Loose lay vs dryback — the head-to-head

These two systems are the most often compared, because they sit at opposite ends of the “permanence” scale. The decision is not about looks — the surface is identical — it is about subfloor access and EN 685 class.

Total installed cost — look past the FOB line

Dryback carries a lower ex-factory price, but installed cost must also include adhesive, 24–48 h of site downtime, and higher removal cost at end of life. For raised-access and phased-renovation projects, loose lay is often the lower total cost despite a higher product price — because it removes the adhesive, the downtime and the future removal cost entirely.

Can one project use both? Often the best answer

Yes — and for large commercial jobs it is frequently optimal: loose lay for raised-access office zones (subfloor access) + dryback for corridors, wet areas and lobbies (Class 42/43/44). Both share the same décor films (EIR wood, stone, terrazzo, carpet), so the floor looks consistent across zones while each area gets the correct system. Both ship from one factory with one CE DoP and certification pack.

Sourcing economics: thickness decides your landed cost

A factor most guides ignore but that moves a distributor’s margin directly: how much floor fits in a container. Thin, dense dryback loads far more square metres than thicker SPC or loose lay. These are our own factory loading figures for a standard 20 ft container:

At the same container freight cost, 2.5 mm dryback carries roughly twice the area of 5 mm SPC click or 5 mm loose lay. For a large Class 33/42 programme where floating installation isn’t required, that yield gap — plus dryback’s lower ex-factory price — can be the deciding specification factor before a single sample is cut.

Choosing by project type — procurement reference

  • UK residential / BTR / PRS: floating preferred (no cure delay). SPC click 5–6 mm with 0.5 mm wear; flexible click LVT where acoustic comfort leads. See the SPC range.
  • Healthcare — ward, corridor, treatment room: Class 44 mandatory. 3 mm dryback, 0.7 mm wear, Bfl-s1, R10, hard-set adhesive.
  • EU office renovation / social housing: Class 33/42. 2.5 mm dryback, 0.5 mm wear — better container yield than SPC click at lower ex-factory cost. Bfl-s1, FloorScore, AgBB for EU.
  • Occupied office fit-out / raised-access / data centre / tenant space: loose lay 5 mm (dual fibreglass for raised-access). Same-day handover, removable at lease end.
  • Airport / supermarket / heavy commercial: Class 44. 3 mm dryback, 0.7 mm wear, hard-set adhesive, Bfl-s1, Grade 5 chemical resistance.

What is the difference between dryback and click LVT?
Dryback uses full-spread adhesive — a permanent bond and the only method that reaches EN 685 Class 44 for healthcare, airports and heavy commercial. Click LVT is a floating floor with a mechanical joint — no adhesive, faster, up to Class 43 (SPC) or Class 33/42 (flexible LVT).

What is loose lay LVT flooring?
Loose lay uses a heavy friction-grip backing over a fibreglass reinforcement layer to hold the floor without adhesive or a click joint. Which LVT system is correct for a hospital?

Can loose lay LVT be used in a bathroom or wet area?
No. Water can migrate under the friction-backed plank edges and lift the floor. Use dryback with a full-perimeter adhesive bond for wet areas — the adhesive seal prevents water migration beneath the floor.

Is dryback or click LVT better value for a large commercial project?
Where Class 33/42 is sufficient and floating installation isn’t required, 2.5 mm dryback wins on two fronts: lower ex-factory price and roughly double the container yield of 5 mm SPC click (~5,000 vs ~2,500 m² per 20 ft).
